My work explores what occurs when photographs are translated into paintings. By using source images that depict family members, I seek to investigate what broader meanings the translation may reveal about human relationships. I begin by drawing from photos, and use information from both the drawing and photo to inform my painting. I remain open during all steps in the translation process, allowing simplification, abstraction, and invention from reconciling mistakes to help drive the conversation between photo, drawing and painting. This process began as a way to personally reaffirm the purpose of drawing and painting when photographs and digital images are so readily available in our contemporary world. I continued this exploration as the resulting drawings and paintings challenged notions of context and revealed complexities of human relationships beyond those that were in the photographs alone.
