Justen Waterhouse

BFA, Fall 2014
Before graduation, Justen Waterhouse’s paintings tried to question how much visual information was needed to make a coherent drawing or painting.
In the way Luc Tuymans’ paintings question the image - its source, lexicon, and integrity - Justen’s work now spans painting and projections to question cultural and visual lexicons. As a bicultural person, Justen draws on her awareness of different cultural understandings and visual lexicons that do not negotiate with each other. By intersecting a painter’s lexicon with digital medias, she negotiates new possibilities for painting and reinterpretations of her own bicultural identity.
